Healthy vegan bacon alternatives

Reasons why eating bacon is bad:

  • Bacon (and other processed meats) have been ranked by The World Health Organisation as a level one carcinogen which means that it’s just as bad for you as asbestos and smoking.
  • The overuse of antibiotics in animal agriculture (including pigs) is leading us to a post antibiotic world – meaning that the more animal products you eat, the less resistant you will become to antibiotics.
  • Studies have suggested that pigs are as intelligent as a 3 year old, as well as numerous other tests showing their high IQ.
  • Eating bacon and other pork products, which are loaded with artery-clogging cholesterol and saturated fat, not only increases your weight, but also increases your chances of developing deadly diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, asthma, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer and impotence.
  • 10 million pigs suffer horrendous deaths each year , that’s around 27,000 pigs each day (and that’s just in the UK alone). These living creatures endure endless amounts of pain after living miserable lives locked in tiny environments without ever seeing the sun until they’re finally transported to their deaths.

But, it’s now 2018 and there are a bazillion healthy & cruelty free alternatives available (yaaas)! So here are my top vegan bacon alternatives made from seitan, rice paper, mushrooms, tofu, carrots, eggplant, zucchini, coconut & tempeh!

I’ve tried all of these recipes (except the zucchini) and I can definitely tell you, they don’t disappoint! Yes some of them are quite labour intensive, so I usually create a batch & then freeze the rest.

They don’t really give you the “bacon” taste, but they do give you a yummy sweet/salty crunch taste (which in my opinion is better). My ultimate favourite is the tofu bacon, but I love adding the coconut bacon to pretty much any meal! Enjoy!
